The two men sat opposite each other and stared for a moment in silence. The cogs inside Matt’s head were still trying to make sense of it all as he waited for Charles to speak. The old man drew a short breath and started talking. He began by saying he understood the manager’s confusion but assured Matt that he hadn’t done anything wrong. He was in his full right to be at the store after closing.
