Kate gently stroked the dog’s fur. She looked into its calm, watchful eyes, feeling a strange connection to this quiet creature. Later, she would find out why that was. With a gentle smile, she spoke: “Can you lead me to where you came from?” The dog’s ears perked up as if understanding her words, and Kate hoped it might guide her to the answers she sought.
