The attacker was restrained, and people began to breathe again. But the tension clung to the square. Dwayne turned to the guard and gave just the slightest nod. There were no visible injuries, but something inside Dwayne had shifted permanently. He looked around and felt a new weight settle in—gratitude and responsibility. The guard now stepped closer and whispered in Dwayne’s ear, “Thank you.”
