Derek stood abruptly, ignoring Maddy’s furious glare. He crossed the room and pulled an old laptop from a dusty shelf. “If it’s offline, it should be safe,” he muttered, his own uncertainty betraying him. Maddy shook her head, but exhaustion had dulled her protests. Joshua moved closer, pulling out a chair. Together, they formed an uneasy triangle around the table, waiting for Derek’s next move. The choice had already been made.
