Reaching the surface

They worked in silence, gripping the safe and pulling together. It was incredibly heavy and resisted every tug. Muscles strained. Hands slipped. Still, they didn’t stop. Inch by inch, the box rose upward. Finally, with one last coordinated heave, it hit the floor. The metal echoed. Amber stood still, staring at it, chest rising with short, fast, shallow breaths of disbelief.
