Lucas could already see the outline of his makeshift shelter and the still-smoking remnants of the fire from last night. They stepped outside, the cold air hitting harder than before. The man winced, shrinking against it. Lucas pulled his thermal blanket from his pack and wrapped it tightly around the man’s shoulders. “We’ll get you by the fire,” he promised. “Hang in there. You’re safe now.”
