Chloe eventually reached out, pressed the button, and stepped back beside her mom. They waited in silence. Chloe held her mother’s arm, trying to calm her. The door didn’t open right away. Then, from the other side, they heard the sound of a bolt unlocking. The door creaked open slowly and a woman appeared in the doorway.
