The engine started, and gravel crunched beneath her tires as she backed out fast. The animal stirred in the backseat but didn’t cry, as if it knew Lilly was helping it. She couldn’t stop looking at the mirror. The trees blurred by. And the man seemed gone. Vanished like he’d never been there at all. Her fingers tightened around the wheel. What was that?
