Inside, the air was warm and stale. Liam scanned the area quickly, and then his heart dropped. The creature was gone—completely. No shape under tarp, no outline in the mud. Just flattened disturbed earth. “They must have taken it,” Liam whispered under his breath, “but where?” His eyes darted around. He hadn’t risked everything just to find nothing. There had to be a clue.
