Back in Oregon, Laura returned to her garden. The rose bush had grown back, tall and full, but she didn’t trim it this year. She left it wild, just like the birds. Sometimes she stood by the back window with a cup of tea, remembering the sound of chirps and fluttering wings. “Six of a kind,” she’d whisper. And somewhere out there, they were flying free.
