They tried distracting her with noise. Speakers played jungle sounds. A recorded call of another orangutan was broadcast from a hidden device. Nothing. Mara didn’t flinch. The team even brought out the giant mirror she used to love watching herself in. But when they rolled it into the enclosure and angled it toward her, she didn’t even glance at it. Her focus remained forward.
