A narrow escape

Ben sprinted back toward the bushes, whatever he’d grabbed clutched tightly in both hands. Behind him, he heard Mara’s hoarse, angry grunt. She lunged forward, but her hesitation slowed her. The realization that something had been taken must have struck her all at once. Ben didn’t look back. He slipped out the enclosure’s rear gate, slammed it shut, and bolted the lock behind him.
