Going way deeper

The digging started slow. Cade expected to hit a rusty pipe or a lost sprinkler head within a few inches. But the deeper he went, the stranger it felt. The dirt got heavier, and the resistance grew. Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. At the thirty-minute mark, he was sweating through his shirt and wondering why he hadn’t stopped. But just as he considered quitting, it happened.
