He pushed forward, scanning wildly for the shaft. Where was it? His vision blurred at the edges. Then—there! The tunnel leading upward, just ahead. He grabbed the stone lip and pulled himself into the shaft, kicking hard, arms tucked to his sides. His flashlight flickered. He counted in his head. Five meters. Ten. Fifteen.
